School can be rough - but here’s why continuing your education formally and informally will change your life.

As a child, it’s easy to perceive school and the educational system as something you can’t wait to get away from. You might have fanaticized about the day you’d no longer have homework assignments due, tests to prepare for, or classes to wake up for in the morning. After spending upwards of twelve years dedicating yourself to your schooling, it’s only natural to yearn for the day your educational journey will be complete. And though you may have already exited the educational system and started your professional life as an adult, that doesn’t mean you should stop learning.

Albert Einstein believed that the purpose of education is not necessarily to be capable of reproducing facts and information, but that the purpose is to train the mind to think. Just because you’ve finished your time in school, doesn’t mean there isn’t more learning that your life has to offer. Learning helps keep your mind active and your memory sharp. When you educate yourself on a regular basis, you are strengthening your critical thinking abilities, which can improve your decision-making skills and reduce stress and anxiety.

Educating yourself regularly could also be beneficial in your professional life. Even if you are not in a profession that requires you to keep up with the newest advancements in technology or procedures, there is always more you could learn about it to hone your skills. The more you can educate yourself in the ways of your profession, the more indispensable you become to your business and the more likely it is that you will be recognized for your hard work.

Being dedicated to expanding your knowledge can be as complicated as going back to school to pursue a higher education degree, or as simple as reading an instructional packet. There are all kinds of ways to broaden your knowledge because we are fortunate enough to live in a day and age where information is readily available at any given moment. There are plenty of how-to books and tutorial videos on the internet that can teach you all kinds of new skills. You could take a class in your community, such as a pottery class or a creative writing seminar to keep your mind active. It never hurts to learn a new skill, and you can tailor your learning experience to focus on the things you’re most interested in.

Learning something new can bring a fresh perspective to your life. It can offer you an insight into the lives of others and inspire a deeper level of empathy within yourself. Putting aside time each day to learn a little bit will add a humbleness to your everyday life that may not have been there before. Not only does it increase your ability to put yourself in the shoes of others, but it also puts you in the mindset that there is always more to learn, and to do so requires an open mind. It never hurts to take advantage of the power of knowledge.
